Emarsys
SAP Engagement Cloud (formerly Emarsys) is an enterprise omnichannel marketing platform that orchestrates personalized campaigns across email, SMS, web, digital ads, mobile, and direct mail using real-time customer data and AI-driven segmentation. It automates cross-channel journeys triggered by business events, predicts campaign performance, and manages customer loyalty programs natively within the platform. The platform integrates directly with SAP Business Data Cloud, SAP CDP, SAP Analytics Cloud, SAP Commerce Cloud, SAP Sales Cloud, and SAP Service Cloud, making it the natural choice for agencies serving enterprise retail, e-commerce, travel/hospitality, and consumer goods clients already embedded in the SAP ecosystem. Global brand enforcement and content localization at scale are built-in, eliminating the need for separate governance tools. Agencies should treat this as an enterprise-only offering requiring significant implementation investment and SAP integration expertise.
Emarsys is a marketing automation tool, integrating with SAP Business Data Cloud, SAP CDP, SAP Analytics Cloud, and SAP Commerce Cloud. InnovaAI scores it 3/10 for agency resale.
Agency Audit
SAP Engagement Cloud is an enterprise omnichannel marketing platform that unifies email, SMS, web, ads, mobile, and direct mail campaigns through a single interface with native AI-driven segmentation and journey automation. It integrates deeply with the SAP ecosystem (Business Data Cloud, CDP, Analytics Cloud, Commerce Cloud) and supports customer loyalty program management natively. Best suited for agencies serving retail, e-commerce, travel/hospitality, and consumer goods clients with complex, multi-channel requirements. Agencies should evaluate this primarily for enterprise-tier retainers where clients already operate within SAP infrastructure; smaller agencies or those serving non-SAP shops will face integration friction.

Bottom Line

Reality Check
SAP Engagement Cloud requires deep integration with SAP's ecosystem to unlock its full value. Agencies reselling to clients outside the SAP environment will need to build custom API bridges or accept limited functionality, increasing implementation cost and support burden per client account.

Core concepts
The mental model you need to price and scope the work.
- Journey Debt RatioConcept
Journey Debt Ratio measures how many workflows are running in a client account against how many are documented, owned, and reviewed. The category's unit of work is the workflow, not the send, so every undocumented nurture sequence, behavioral trigger, or sales handoff is a liability that surfaces when the original builder leaves. Agencies feel this first: a retainer priced on three journeys quietly carries eleven, and the gap is invisible until a trigger misfires on client-facing email. The failure mode is well evidenced. Pact0 ran 13 blind agent sessions against its own onboarding flow and only 3 of 11 agents completed the full loop, roughly 27%, which is what happens when multi-step logic runs without tracing or review checkpoints. Audit each account by counting live journeys, then count the ones with a named owner and a written trigger map. Anything above a 2:1 ratio means the retainer is under-scoped or the delivery team is absorbing unpaid maintenance.
- Autonomy Tiering For Client WorkflowsConcept
Autonomy tiering assigns every client-facing workflow a level from 1 (drafts only, human sends) to 4 (acts unsupervised on CRM and messaging data), then sets review checkpoints and monitoring to match. The tier, not the tool, determines liability. Agencies that tier explicitly can sell higher-autonomy builds at higher retainers because the risk is priced, documented, and bounded; agencies that skip tiering discover the ceiling during an incident. The evidence for caution is concrete: Pact0 ran 13 blind agent sessions against its own onboarding flow with a 30-turn limit and only 3 of 11 agents completed the full loop, roughly 27%. A WhatsApp broadcast flow built on AiSensy or a nurture sequence in ActiveCampaign may sit comfortably at tier 2, while an agent that writes lead scores into a client CRM belongs at tier 3 with sampled human review. Tier first, then choose the platform.
- Handoff Fidelity ScoreConcept
Handoff Fidelity Score measures how much of a marketing automation build survives the moment an agency stops touching it. The framework scores four dimensions on a 1 to 5 scale: documented journey logic, CRM field integrity, exception handling coverage, and a measurable operating baseline the client can read without the agency. A workflow that scores 4 or higher on all four can be maintained by a client-side ops hire; anything below 3 on two or more dimensions is a support liability disguised as recurring revenue. The category description is explicit that a complete handoff and measurable operating baseline matter more than claims of indefinite recurring revenue, and this score operationalizes that test. Consider a nurture build in ActiveCampaign or Brevo: if the client cannot explain why a lead exited a sequence, the handoff failed regardless of how many journeys were shipped. Agencies that score before invoicing the final milestone avoid the 90-day rework cycle that erodes margin on retainer renewals.
Decision and risk
How to judge the fit, and the ways it goes wrong.
- When Journeys Outnumber Staff, Price the Maintenance Not the BuildEvaluation Rule
Price the engagement on the count of journeys, integrations, approvals, and maintenance obligations, and put that count in the contract before any build starts.
- When Workflow Count Outpaces Headcount, Cap the Journey Portfolio Before Adding ChannelsEvaluation Rule
Cap the number of live workflows per client at what your current delivery team can monitor, test, and document weekly, and only add a new channel when an existing journey is retired or fully automated.
- Marketing Automation Decision: Journey Ownership vs Channel ExecutionDecision Framework
IF a client's revenue depends on multi-step lifecycle behavior across email, SMS, and messaging apps, and the agency can document CRM integrity, attribution, and exception handling, THEN price the engagement by journeys, integrations, approvals, and maintenance obligations rather than by send volume. IF the work is single-channel broadcasting with no scoring model or sales handoff, THEN treat it as a channel execution retainer and keep the scope narrow.

What agencies say about Emarsys
“SAP Engagement Cloud (Emarsys) is the…”
SAP Engagement Cloud (Emarsys) is the worst ESP tool ever created, and their team has no idea what they are doing. They just destroyed my ability to quickly analyze the data, adding stupid friction to my experience. They hate the user; they have no idea what UI means.
Read on Trustpilot“Warning: scam!”
Warning! Wotsapp scam. You get contacted about an amazing job opportunity for a company called Emarsys. You are told its to boost visibility and sales. You are then taken through a training session and shown how to click on products - be it movies or services or products. You are promised massive earnings for doing so. In the training session you end up with £30 in your bank account thus lulled into a false sense of security. You are required to deposit a sum of money in order to co tiniest with your "work". The first couple of days you will be in profit by maybe £250. So you think, wow this is actually legit! Now here's the kicker - you only get your deposit (and earnings) if you complete the set. However; now and then you get presented with what they refer to as "merged data" so you are unable to continue unless you make another deposit. These deposits get larger and larger (I'm talking thousands) in the promise of earning a huge bonus. So please, if it seems too easy and good to be true, then it is. No employer will ask you for money in order to pay your salary. No prospective employer will contact you via wotsapp. Please be warned!!
Read on Trustpilot“Booted out long standing client.”
Booted out long standing client. We were with Emarsys since the early days in 2009. Long standing loyal client, paid every month. Possibly the longest standing client. Services are entirely automated so for them it was easy money. It is not as if they were providing any hand-holding, training or regular personal service in getting better results. It must be over 3 years since they offered any training on the platform. The exception is issue management which was generally good. They have revised their pricing structure and didnt like the deal we were on so they booted us out with less than a months notice to quit. Heavy integrations of the platform into our systems so you can imagine the inconvenience. They didnt offer a new deal but then tried to increase the price around 5-10x without giving any presentation. We were paying a significant amount of several hundreds per month. It would have been no issue to them to honour the deal we had all made in good faith. On pointing out the contract they did extend the notice period. They have some good software and the service to be fair is OK. However, think seriously about the ethics of this company before signing up and committing your infrastructure to them.
