Agency Audit

Hologram is not a fit for most digital agencies. It provides global cellular IoT connectivity via SIM cards, outage protection, and fleet management for hardware and IoT product companies, not service firms. Unless your agency builds or deploys IoT devices as part of client deliverables, Hologram addresses infrastructure your team will never touch. The tool is built for companies shipping connected hardware to 190+ countries, not for managing internal team workflows or client services.

01

Why this category matters

The commercial case before the tooling.

  1. API Governance as a Retainer Engine: Why Agencies Should Own the Integration LayerStrategy

Agencies that bundle API governance into delivery convert one-off integrations into recurring stability retainers, but only if they match gateway complexity to client scale. With agentic AI adoption at 77% among decision-makers, poorly governed endpoints become the first failure point in AI workflows, making API reliability a premium service.

02

Core concepts

The mental model you need to price and scope the work.

  1. Gateway Cost CeilingConcept

The Gateway Cost Ceiling framework holds that the appropriate API management tier scales with the complexity of the integration, not the size of the client. Simple client needs, like a single CRM sync or a basic webhook, rarely justify enterprise-grade gateways that add cost without proportional value. Agencies that over-engineer with platforms like WSO2 or API7 for a straightforward REST endpoint burn margin and complicate delivery. Conversely, AI agent traffic, with its token-level spend and security demands, pushes complexity past what basic documentation tools like ReadMe can handle, making a gateway like Zuplo or Gravitee a justified premium. The ceiling is crossed when you need token rate limiting, fail-closed security, or multi-protocol governance. Agencies that map each client engagement to the minimal viable tier protect margins while reserving premium retainers for genuinely complex builds.

  2. Integration Liability CurveConcept

Every API an agency wires into a client's stack becomes a recurring liability: a broken endpoint, a rate limit, or a version change can stall delivery and burn unbilled hours. The Integration Liability Curve frames this cost as a function of governance depth. Agencies that treat API management as an afterthought, patching issues as they surface, absorb the liability in fixed-fee projects. Those that bundle governance, documentation, and monitoring into the retainer convert that liability into predictable premium revenue. For example, a client CRM integration built on a platform like Directus, which auto-generates REST and GraphQL APIs, still needs versioning discipline and access control to avoid drift. The curve suggests a threshold: below it, simple client needs are over-served by enterprise gateways like WSO2 or API7, adding cost without proportional value; above it, skipping governance turns every integration into a support ticket.

  3. Agent Traffic GovernanceConcept

Agent Traffic Governance is the discipline of managing API access for AI agents, not just human users. As AI agents increasingly browse, query, and act on behalf of users, agencies must secure and control this new traffic class. The framework positions agent traffic as a distinct governance layer, separate from traditional API management. It matters because agents generate different patterns: high request volumes, token-based costs, and unique security risks. Agencies that implement agent-aware gateways can charge premium retainers for ongoing stability and cost control. For example, a gateway that rate-limits LLM calls and caps spend prevents runaway costs, turning a potential liability into a managed service. This approach avoids over-engineering simple client needs while preparing for the agentic future.

03

Decision and risk

How to judge the fit, and the ways it goes wrong.

  1. API Management Rule: Match Gateway Complexity to Client Traffic, Not Vendor HypeEvaluation Rule

Choose the simplest API management layer that meets current traffic and security needs, and upgrade only when measured demand justifies it.

  2. API Management Rule: Govern AI Agent Traffic Before It Hits Your Client's EndpointsEvaluation Rule

Deploy an AI-aware gateway that authenticates, rate-limits, and observes both inbound agent traffic and outbound LLM calls before scaling any AI-powered client feature.

  3. API Governance as Retainer Service vs Per-Project IntegrationDecision Framework

IF your agency consistently delivers integrations for clients that require ongoing maintenance, security updates, or AI agent traffic management, THEN bundle API governance into a recurring retainer to stabilize revenue and justify premium pricing. IF client needs are simple, one-off connections with minimal post-launch change, THEN treat API management as a per-project cost to avoid over-engineering and margin erosion.

  4. The Gateway-First Trap: Why API Management Stalls When Agencies Over-Engineer Client IntegrationsFailure Pattern
  5. The Documentation Debt Spiral: Why API Management Stalls When Agencies Skip the HandoffFailure Pattern

04

Delivery system

Blueprints and procedures for running it as a service.

  1. API Governance Retainer Sprint (10-20 days)Implementation Blueprint

A structured engagement to audit, secure, and productize a client's API ecosystem, converting ad-hoc integrations into a governed, billable retainer.

  2. API Governance Gate (Delivery)Operating Procedure
  3. API Lifecycle Audit (Retention)Operating Procedure
  4. API Reliability Monitoring (Retention)Operating Procedure

“Honest and customer focused partners”

Honest and customer focused partners I am very happy to work with Hologram, after having had another connectivity provider that was both less transparent as well as mostly dismissive of our existence untill we threatened to leave. Whenever we have anything to ask about we get good answers, and more help that our other alternatives were willing to provide. There are many alternatives that are good, but after reviewing our options we felt like this was the one really great option for us.

“Unreliable Service – Eliminated from Our Provider List”

We had been using Hologram SIM cards for about a month with no issues—until 4 days ago, when SIM cards began disconnecting one after another. All vehicles went offline, even though they were on the move. The dashboard showed them in “Ready” status but with no connectivity. We contacted sales support via the website, submitted a ticket, but no one responded. Instead, we received automated replies from an AI bot via email, which couldn’t resolve anything. The AI chat on the website also blocked access to any real human agent, which is unacceptable for a mission-critical service. We can't afford to lose our clients' trust or wait more than 5 days for a fix, so we made the decision to completely stop using Hologram SIM cards. We are now switching to Emnify, which—while more expensive—offers much better performance, reliability, and full control over our fleet and connected devices. We're currently in a testing phase to choose our long-term provider, and Hologram.io is now permanently eliminated from our list. We strongly do not recommend Hologram to any serious business.

I’ve been with them 3years and their network is horrible. Constant network outages and they overcharge you for data/sms usage that you don’t even use. You CANT speak to a live person unless your getting new service. They will have your business so unstable. Worst service EVER. Bunch of amateurs in support. Scripted support. Epic Fail. Don’t use them. But it seem All IOT sim companies are the same. Full of Sh&!

Hologram provides global cellular IoT connectivity via SIM cards, outage protection, and fleet management. It connects IoT devices across 190+ countries, prevents outages by automatically switching to backup coverage, manages SIM fleets through a centralized dashboard, and orchestrates SIM profile changes via Conductor automation. The platform includes a REST API for custom integrations and test mode for pre-deployment validation.

Hologram uses custom/enterprise pricing — rates are not published publicly; contact their team for a quote.

Hologram is built for hardware and IoT product companies, not digital service agencies. If your agency builds IoT devices or embeds cellular connectivity into client deliverables, your CTO or VP of Engineering benefits most from fleet management and outage protection. Operations teams gain efficiency from centralized SIM provisioning. Project Managers reduce deployment friction via test mode validation.

No. Hologram is designed for companies shipping connected devices to customers. If your agency delivers web design, marketing, strategy, or software development services without IoT hardware components, Hologram has no internal use case. The platform addresses infrastructure and connectivity challenges that only apply to hardware manufacturers and IoT product teams.

Hologram provides a REST API for custom integrations and GitHub support for CI/CD workflows. It does not integrate with common agency tools like project management platforms, CRMs, or design software. Integration value accrues only to teams embedding device connectivity into their products or managing deployed hardware fleets.

Rollout depends on your use case. Self-service SIM provisioning can begin immediately after account creation. Pre-deployment testing and Conductor automation require engineering time to integrate with your device firmware and backend systems. Enterprise deployments with custom network configurations require sales engagement and may take weeks to configure.

Only if your agency is responsible for the hardware connectivity layer of client deliverables. If you build the firmware, manage SIM provisioning, or oversee device deployments for clients, Hologram can reduce your operational overhead. If clients manage their own connectivity, Hologram adds no value to your internal workflows.

Hologram's key advantage over Traditional single-carrier SIMs that fail during outages: Outage protection with automatic backup switching. Hologram switches to backup coverage the moment a carrier goes down, preventing device downtime. Overall: Hologram is not a fit for most digital agencies. It provides global cellular IoT connectivity via SIM cards, outage protection, and fleet management for hardware and IoT product companies, not service firms. Unless your agency builds or deploys IoT devices as part of client deliverables, Hologram addresses infrastructure your team will never touch.
